Chelsea Boccagno is a T32 post-doctoral researcher working in the Nock Lab, CAUSALab (Department of Epidemiology, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health), and Dauten Family Center for Bipolar Treatment Innovation (Department of Psychiatry, Massachusetts General Hospital \[MGH\]). Across these labs, her research mentors are Drs. Matt Nock, Miguel Hernán, and Louisa Sylvia and Andrew Nierenberg, respectively. Chelsea completed her PhD in Clinical Science at Harvard University in 2023, alongside her pre-doctoral internship at MGH. Her graduate school research focused on (a) how our sense of who we are is associated with our ability to regulate emotions, and (b) how understanding this relationship between identity and emotion could advance our knowledge and treatment of self-injurious behaviors (e.g., non-suicidal self-injury, disordered eating, suicide attempts). To examine these topics, Chelsea conducted lab-based and online behavioral studies, and analyzed social media datasets.

In her post-doc research, Chelsea is using causal inference methods to identify effective (and ineffective) treatments for suicide prevention in individuals with serious mental illnesses (e.g., bipolar disorder). She leverages existing datasets to do so (e.g., randomized controlled trials, electronic health records). She is currently examining whether and how the discontinuation of psychiatric medications (e.g., lithium) affects suicidal thoughts and behaviors in individuals with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. She also intends to examine how different features on peer support social media networks are helpful or harmful for people struggling with suicidal thougts and behaviors.
